The awards are open to engineering leaders and teams who have made a significant impact on society and demonstrated exceptional engineering vision and skill through their work. The awards provide an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the invaluable contribution the engineering profession makes to society and applaud the innovation and quality of work produced by engineers both at home and abroad. Caroline Spillane, director general of Engineers Ireland, said: “The Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards showcase engineering vision and skill, recognising the most outstanding engineering accomplishments and engineering talent in Ireland. There is a category for everyone and we encourage entries from all disciplines of engineering.”

Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards categories

The Engineering Project of the Year, sponsored by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, is one of the most hotly contested award categories with the winner decided by a weighted voting process involving an online public vote and a panel of expert judges. This award emphasises the important contribution engineers makes to society and recognises the highest level of achievement in the engineering field. In 2018, the coveted award title went to Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme by Irish Water, in association with Kerry County Council, Nicholas O'Dwyer, TOBIN Consulting Engineers and Glan Agua. The Engineering Education Award has also been re-introduced for 2019. This award category recognises innovation and excellence in Irish engineering education and will be presented to a third-level institution. The Geoscience Ireland Award, sponsored by Geoscience Ireland; the Local Authority Engineering Initiative Award, sponsored by Colas Bitumen Emulsions and the Heritage and Conservation Award, sponsored by the OPW will also be open for entry as of July 1.

Members of the public are also encouraged to nominate an Irish engineer that you know who has worked or is working on a project outside of Ireland that clearly contributes to society for the International Engineer of the Year Award.
