“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work” – Thomas Edison Are you dreaming of an opportunity to use your skills as an engineer to work with local communities to create sustainable solutions in the Global South? This can become a reality, just like it did for Elaine Doyle, engineer and Global Awareness Programme winner, 2012. Doyle travelled to Guatemala to work on an environmental conservation project after successfully winning a partly-funded Travel Award with EIL Intercultural Learning. The project in Guatemala held many opportunities and the Irish engineer immediately knew what her primary focus would be, which was to design and build a functioning rainwater harvesting unit for the nature reserve where she worked. Doyle worked with community members to create a low-tech solution to a local problem using locally sourced materials and involving community members, so that the project could be sustained after her departure. On her return, Doyle developed and launched a ‘Guide to Low-Cost Rainwater Harvesting’. Her Travel Award opportunity created a much valued link between Irish and Guatemalan culture, engineering and environmental solutions and global justice and technology. Share your ideas, skills and passion for engineering and apply for the Global Awareness Programme Travel Award. This year, the GAP project will be again based in Guatemala with a new opportunity to increase awareness about the environment in South Africa. If your passion does not stop at engineering and the environment, check out the HIV & AIDS focused Global Awareness programme or the other Travel Awards and apply for the one that best suits you. Simply download an application form and return the completed application to EIL Ireland, 1 Empress Place, Summerhill North, Cork City, before 10 March 2015.  Check out the Tips for Applicants page and The Action Project page to find out what we are looking for in applicants, how to write a winning application and previous award winners' stories.
