Introduction to Biopharmaceutical Operations

Details

3-day course

CPD Credit: 20 hours, C1/C2

Course Overview

This course is designed to introduce the biopharmaceutical industry and the main biopharmaceutical manufacturing operations to attendees. The course will cover topics such as cell culture and upstream processing, aseptic techniques, bioreactor operation, harvesting, chromatography, filtration, and filling operations.

In Partnership With:

Course Aim

This course introduces the typical upstream, downstream and fill finish operations carried out in a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility. The course will expand attendees’ knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the bioprocessing industry.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, delegates should be able to:

  • Describe cell biology and the types of cells that are used in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Describe how cells produce protein.
  • Outline cell growth kinetics and scale up.
  • Discuss bioreactor features and controls.
  • Outline the main harvesting techniques used for purification of a protein product.
  • Describe the principal stages of downstream processing for protein products.
  • Outline the main equipment involved in sterile fill finish operations and their modes of operation.
  • Discuss the fundamental aspects of sterile filling operations for biopharmaceutical drug products.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for technical staff, engineers and managers wishing to increase their knowledge of the operations in a modern bioprocessing plant.

Trainer Profile

John Milne PhD, NIBRT Director of Training

John is currently employed as the Director of Training & Education at the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training, Ireland (NIBRT). His responsibility includes leading a full-time training team responsible for the delivery of innovative training and education programmes to the Biopharma industry and third-level institutes. As an Associate Lecturer, John also currently delivers theoretical modules in Biopharmaceutical Science in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses to a series of third-level institutes. He has over 25+ yrs. experience in the purification of proteins and peptide products.

About NIBRT

NIBRT is a global centre of excellence for training and research in bioprocessing located in a world-class facility. This Biopharma for Engineers training course is a one-day course designed to deliver a detailed introduction to the bioprocessing industry and the operations involved focusing on key areas of engineering. The course involves theoretical sessions to introduce the trainee to the key areas involved in the bioprocessing industry followed by a walk-down of the equipment involved. The course will then focus on the utilities involved in the biopharmaceutical production process.
