Academic

Academic society logoThe Academic society is a special interest group for engineers who lecture or conduct research in third-level institutions or graduate students who aspire to careers in academia.

Its mission is to promote the advancement of academic standards in engineering and facilitate and organise activities for key academic groups. It aims to develop and disseminate a body of knowledge for engineers working within the academic community which will also serve those engineering professionals with an interest in academic topics. Members can benefit from: Networking with colleagues Networking with industry experts Keeping up to date with the latest events, technical presentations and access to research and support material. Attending events, courses, site visits and customised seminars to advance their continuous professional development.

Seeing the unseen: CAOS camera technology from UCC captures previously invisible scenes

Imagine that you are driving at night. You are tired. Suddenly, you see a bright light approaching you, getting even brighter. It is the headlights from a truck. At that instant, your vision is impaired due to the dazzling brightness. You hope for the best that in the next few moments, the truck will pass you by without another vehicle appearing in or near your lane. Actuation and control of a transradial upper-limb prosthesis

Consider this: how intuitive is it for you to reach out and grab the nearest object to you? Perhaps you are reading this on a mobile device that you are holding in one hand while doing something else entirely with the other one. Have you ever contemplated how many mundane tasks you perform on a daily basis that require two hands? What about tasks that require fine motor control, such as tying your shoelaces or handling something delicate, like an egg? Our world is filled with ...

Plant-to-human communication: nanobionic spinach plants can detect explosives

Spinach is no longer just a superfood. By embedding leaves with carbon nanotubes, MIT engineers have transformed spinach plants into sensors that can detect explosives and wirelessly relay that information to a handheld device similar to a smartphone. This is one of the first demonstrations of engineering electronic systems into plants, an approach that the researchers call "plant nanobionics." "The goal of plant nanobionics is to introduce nanoparticles into the plant to give it ...

Diversity and inclusion is crucial for engineering future - Prof Ann Dowling

The public lecture by Prof Dame Ann Dowling OM DBE FRS FREng, entitled ‘Diversity and Inclusion: A Value Proposition for Engineering’, took place in Trinity College on 26 October. Prof Dowling, a world authority on combustion and acoustics, is professor of mechanical engineering and deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Cambridge and the first female president of the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE). The event marked the tenth anniversary of the WiSER (Centre for Women in Science ...

Inside Aghada - an online tool to help students understand electricity generation

‘Inside Aghada’ is an online power station demonstration tool, developed by ESB, that offers teachers and students a real insight into the workings of its Aghada generating plant. ESB is an integral part of communities throughout Ireland and beyond and has been supplying power to industry, communities and homes for almost 90 years. Its position as Ireland's foremost energy company makes it a vital part of building a brighter and more sustainable future. It also aims to build brighter ...

Are robotic tutors for primary school children on the way?

The use of robotic tutors in primary school classrooms is one step closer according to research recently published in the open access journal Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience. Dr Imbernòn Cuadrado and his co-workers at the Department of Artificial Intelligence in Madrid have developed an integrated computational architecture (ARTIE) for use with software applications in schools. "The main goal of our work was to design a system that can detect the emotional state of primary ...
