Can your Transition Year students solve Peter’s Problem? Get your Thinking Caps on and see if you can demonstrate the beauty, playfulness and creativity of maths.  

Every year the Irish Mathematics Teachers Association (IMTA) Council run a special competition for Transition Year pupils, dedicated to the memory of the late Peter Tiernan, called Peter’s Problem. This is a number of challenging mathetical problems to be solved. The winners, and their school, receive a prize, as well as the pride and glory of this respected academic achievement. 

Peter’s Problem is released in January. More details to come.

The campaign has launched with An Engineer Like Me, a full-colour national magazine designed to attract young people into engineering by highlighting engineering role models, showcasing diverse career paths, and illustrating the different routes into the profession.

STEPS turned 25 years in 2025! To celebrate this achievement, we published a position paper ‘From Awareness to Action: STEPS at 25 advocating for engineering outreach’, which examines the pivotal role of early engineering and STEM education and outreach.

The plot follows a group of middle school students who are in a competition among other school children to design a futuristic city as they get guidance and coaching from a Los Angeles civil servant.
