Established in 1985 John T. Garrett & Associates is a firm of Consulting Engineers, Mediators, Conciliators and Expert Witness Trainers. We have extensive knowledge and experience in providing Expert Witness testimony to the courts and other dispute resolution processes. We want to share what we have learned over many years for the benefit of those who may be required to act as Expert Witnesses.

Training aim

In this programme the trainer will share knowledge and skills acquired over a 32 year period that will help to ensure the availability of excellent Expert Witnesses.

Learning objectives

On completion of the programme attendees will understand the role and duties of the Expert Witness, be familiar with the latest statutory instruments relating to court procedures, know how to form well reasoned expert opinions and prepare excellent engineering reports, have the necessary courtroom skills and be able to prepare with confidence to work effectively as an Expert Witness

Course outline

This presentation explains the role and duties of the Expert Witness. Key recommendations of the Law Reform Commission's Report on Consolidation and Reform of Aspects of the Law of Evidence (published January 2017) are discussed. The presentation shows how to write an excellent report and describes the preparation necessary by the Expert prior to giving evidence in court. Skills necessary to remain in control and deal with cross-examination confidently and professionally are demonstrated.

Trainer's profile

John Garrett, B.E., FIEI, Chartered Engineer is Director of John T. Garrett & Associates. He has given evidence as an Expert Witness in civil action court cases and arbitrations on many occasions throughout his career. He is a member of Engineers Ireland Panel of Conciliators. The Law Reform Commission has acknowledged John’s assistance in the preparation of its report. This presentation was shortlisted by Engineers Ireland for an excellence award in the Best Presentation category in 2016.

Attendees will prepare a "Summary of key learning nuggets" and contribute to a round table discussion during the day.They will receive a certificate.
