Ryanair has commenced works on a new flight simulator project at Ryanair HQ in Swords, Dublin. Once complete, the new flight simulator will allow Ryanair to assess cadets and provide an industry leading opportunity for pilots to practice their manual handling skills in a relaxed environment. Atkins is providing multi-discipline services including civil and structural, architecture, M&E and Fire Safety Engineering. Design works where provided from concept stage through to construction including planning and tender stages. Atkins is also providing PSDP and assigned certifier roles. The new annex building which includes a link bridge to the existing Ryanair HQ will house the first of a new generation fixed base flight simulator. The building includes two new briefing rooms and a large open area in which the simulator will be located. Construction is currently underway on site and is expected to complete by the end of May 2016. “Atkins is delighted to be project designers for the new annex to house the simulator. We look forward to completing this exciting project successfully with Ryanair and Ganson Contractors,” said Justin Norman of Atkins. “It is exciting to work with such a dynamic client. The proposed building is being constructed on an existing reinforced concrete podium slab which brings its own set of challenges from a design and construction perspective. “Another interesting challenge is the requirement to keep the Ryanair HQ building and surround infrastructure operational at all times. Atkins’ ultimate goal is to ensure Ryanair has a purpose built building to showcase their first new generation fixed base flight simulators,” said Garry Hanratty, project manager at Atkins.
