As programme coordinator for the UCD blended online Professional Certificate in Environmental Management, Dr Conor Buggy has developed a range of mechanisms to engage professional students in online learning. For the last two years the Professional Certificate has successfully delivered a suite of online lectures, discussion fora, specified learning activities and problem based learning workshops across a range of modules to both students resident in Ireland and Irish students travelling abroad. Irish students have participated in the programme from France, Malaysia, Ghana, Haiti, Cameroon and Qatar. As part of Dr Buggy’s ongoing research project into climate change education with Dr Gayle McGlynn of Trinity College Dublin, he travelled to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania to implement an experiment using online education regarding the responsiveness of students there to the process of e-learning. In partnership with Dar Es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE), the Climate Change Awareness in Education Project is now in its third year and is implementing online education practices developed in UCD for the Professional Certificate, for Irish students, for students in DUCE. This year the students are undertaking e-lectures on climate change science in order to enhance their knowledge. It is hoped that the techniques developed in UCD will prove beneficial for students in DUCE.
