Nestled a mere 150 metres from the Irish Sea in People’s Park, Dún Laoghaire, stand two historic cast-iron fountains with a legacy dating back to circa 1850.
Originally cast in Glasgow, Scotland, these fountains are not only decorative landmarks but also enduring pieces of engineering heritage.

Having last undergone refurbishment shortly after the Second World War, the fountains required a comprehensive restoration to withstand the harsh coastal environment – characterised by salt-laden air, wind-driven chlorides, and repeated freeze/thaw cycles.

The 2007 restoration process
In December 2007, a full refurbishment was undertaken to restore and protect these iconic structures. The process included:
- Abrasive blast cleaning to remove all existing coatings and contaminants;
- Detailed surface preparation, including spot treatment of holes, edges, and intricate areas using ZINGA applied by brush;
- Full structural protection using a sprayed application of ZINGA;
- Additional layer of ZINGALUFER, enhancing barrier protection;
- Decorative topcoats, including a green chlorinated rubber finish and white coating on ornamental angel features.
By May 2008, the fountains were fully restored – combining aesthetic appeal with advanced corrosion protection.
18-year performance in a marine environment
A follow-up inspection conducted on March 11, 2026, more than 18 years after application, revealed remarkable results:
- The decorative topcoats had completely deteriorated;
- However, the ZINGA and ZINGALUFER layers remained fully intact;
- No corrosion was detected, despite continuous exposure to a highly aggressive coastal environment.
This outcome highlights the critical difference between cosmetic coatings and true protective systems.

ZINGA film galvanising system puts rust to rest
Extreme environments demand superior protection” ZINGA® is a high-quality alternative to hot-dip galvanising and metallisation, both in new construction and for the repair of rusted steel.
It can replace traditional coating systems or work complementary with hot dipped galvanised or metallised structures. Due to its high percentage of pure zinc (96% in the dry layer) it offers excellent cathodic protection for steel.
The ZINGA system differs from all other traditional ‘paints’ thanks to the combination of this active, cathodic protection, and a passive barrier protection.
Key advantages of the ZINGA system:
- Single-component system – no mixing required;
- Up to 25-year corrosion protection warranty (@120μ DFT);
- Fast drying – touch dry in as little as 10 minutes;
- Versatile application – spray, brush, or roller;
- Reversible and renewable – can be recharged over time;
- Unlimited shelf life and pot life;
- Environmentally responsible – free from toxic or carcinogenic solvents;
- Certified for potable water contact (NSF 61);
- Extreme temperature tolerance (-40°C to +120°C);
- High humidity application capability (up to 95% RH).
A proven solution for extreme environments
The People’s Park fountains are a powerful example of how advanced zinc-based protection systems can preserve both structure and heritage. While decorative finishes may fade, the underlying protection provided by ZINGA continues to perform – year after year.
With over 40 years of proven success across demanding environments worldwide, ZINGA remains a trusted alternative to hot-dip galvanising and metallisation, suitable for both new construction and refurbishment projects.
Conclusion
Historic structures require more than aesthetic restoration – they demand long-term protection. The enduring condition of the Dún Laoghaire fountains after nearly two decades is a testament to the reliability of the ZINGA system.
