Geopolymer Resin Injection is an advanced form of ground stabilisation used to strengthen weak and subsiding soils beneath existing structures.

The technology can exceed depths of traditional underpinning, and can match depths of piles but without the need for excavations.

Additionally, this method can also be used to lift a concrete slab or enhance an original foundation where increased load bearing capacity is required; for example, during structural alterations.

Cracks closed to a minimal tolerance

In some cases buildings can be lifted back close to the original height and cracks closed to a minimal tolerance.

The technique requires a small hole drilled through the foundations or surface followed by steel lances, and then injected by the correct resin mix at the desired depth and moved up to the bottom of the foundations or surface. As the resin expands, it compacts and strengthens the surrounding soil while filling voids.

During the process the structure is being monitored in real time using a laser level, and the drains are being surveyed to make sure there are no defects. The benefits to this technology, as well as not having to excavate, is that it can be completed in just a few days as it is far less labour intensive.

As the resin heats up and expands it will singe off any root systems, helping to address one of the main causes of subsidence; and, due to the nature of the product, roots won’t be able to penetrate it, and it won’t crack leading to further movement of the structure.

More cost effective

There is no need for curing or consolidation periods, so any making good to the superstructure can follow on immediately. Additionally, this method is more cost effective for the end user.

Developed during the 1980s, only a small number of contractors are available to work this method across the world (let alone in the UK and Ireland).

Resin Injection Technology Ltd has been operating in the UK for a number of years and has recently been advertising in the Republic of Ireland.

Over the years the company has seen an increase of subsided properties and buildings. With current climate changes, structures built over clay and soft soils, and of an age regulations and specifications were different from today’s standards, more and more buildings are being affected.

Resin Injection Technology has worked well with a number of agencies – from local government, heritage trusts, structural engineers, and individual homeowners – to help save structures without the need of upheaval that you would experience from other methods. The company can also help with improvement works.
