When we think about flood defence, we usually picture flood walls, storage tanks and large drainage networks. But a system is only as reliable as the everyday components that keep water moving and allow teams to inspect and maintain it. Drainage channels and access covers may be less visible, but choosing the right solution can make a significant difference when water levels rise and the system is put under pressure.
Key considerations for designers include:
- Storm surge resistant covers;
- Watertight covers;
- Drainage solutions;
- Access chambers;
- Maintenance accessibility;
- Whole-life asset performance.
Design for the conditions on site
Location should determine the performance specification. In trafficked areas, covers and gratings must suit the anticipated loading and installation detail. In low-lying, coastal or flood-prone locations, designers should also assess water ingress, hydraulic uplift, and the possibility of a cover becoming displaced.
Watertight covers and storm surge resistant covers address different design risks. A water-tight cover may be required to limit surface-water entry or protect equipment within an access chamber. Where rising water or a storm surge could create pressure from below, the cover, frame, locking system and supporting structure must also resist hydraulic uplift and remain secure. Designers should define the required performance and check it against suitable test evidence rather than relying on a general water-tightness claim.

Match drainage to the whole site
Drainage products should be selected within the site's overall water-management strategy. Designers need to consider catchment area, rainfall intensity, longitudinal and cross falls, outlet constraints, maintenance access and the consequences of blockage or exceedance. Channel and gully capacity alone cannot compensate for an undersized downstream network or a poorly positioned outlet.

Make maintenance easier from day one
A resilient system must continue to function beyond commissioning. Penstocks, flow-control devices, interceptors, pumping stations and attenuation systems all require inspection, cleaning and occasional repair. Designers should therefore establish how frequently each asset will be accessed, who will access it, the equipment required and the conditions likely to be present.
Safe lifting, suitable clear openings, fall protection, security and corrosion resistance are not secondary details. They influence whether planned maintenance can be completed safely and efficiently. Where access is difficult, intervention may be delayed, increasing blockage risk, downtime and whole-life cost.

Specify with long-term value in mind
Material selection should reflect exposure, loading, access frequency and operational priorities. Ductile iron provides proven strength for demanding trafficked applications. Composite covers and structural chambers can offer corrosion resistance, reduced lifting weight and easier handling where those characteristics support the risk assessment.
EJ supports designers with integrated drainage solutions, watertight and storm surge resistant covers, and access chambers for surface water, utility and critical infrastructure applications. The design value lies in selecting compatible components with the right load, sealing and restraint performance, while ensuring maintenance accessibility. This coordinated approach helps protect whole-life asset performance rather than treating each product as an isolated item.
Resilience is ultimately measured by how infrastructure performs during severe events and throughout its service life. By bringing access, drainage and maintainability into early design decisions, engineers can reduce operational risk, protect capital investment and help flood defence systems deliver lasting value to operators and communities.
