The numbers are in – this year’s Engineers Week was a resounding success with an increase in the total number of events, participants and industry organisations involved. Engineers Week is co-ordinated on a national basis by Engineers Ireland as part of the school’s outreach programme STEPS, which is a strategic partner of Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Programme. Throughout the week, hundreds of events took place with a view to inspiring the next generation of engineers. In total, some 527 events were attended by 37,500 participants across 27 countries. In the build up to Engineers Week, schools were encouraged to request a visit from a volunteer engineer. This initiative was met with a great response, resulting in 7,000 primary and secondary students engaging with working engineers through the school visits. Budding engineers were spoiled for choice as there was an array of events held at schools, colleges, companies and libraries around Ireland. Dr Johnston entertained future engineers in Dublin for the third year running with his new show. ‘Stuff!’ was an exploration of some of the strange and imaginative ways materials have been used over the years – from Greek doorways to beer mats, and from towers to towels. There were live demonstrations, audience participation and a considerable number of magic lantern slides. The Computer and Communications Museum of Ireland hosted an open morning for aspiring engineers on Saturday 14 February. Attendees enjoyed the fascinating sights and sounds of the museum located in the Insight Centre for Data Analytics NUI Galway at the Dangan Business Park. The unique technology heritage facility provides a wonderful insight into advances in communications from ancient hieroglyphics to today’s Internet. Thematic displays include early Radio, Irish-made computers from the 1970s and 1980s, Women in Technology, and a vintage video games section with classics such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Pacman and Space Invaders. Lifetime Lab, Cork celebrated Engineers Week with a special family fun day on Saturday 14 February. It hosted a free event with activities themed around different engineering disciplines staffed by volunteer engineers. Activities included the Learn it LEGO Construction Challenge, LEGO building, KNEX, VEX IQ robotics and Roman re-enactments.
