Research has consistently shown that young adults are more likely to work in STEM if they had a positive career role model.

Many young students do not have access to an Engineer Role Model and thus may never explore the idea of engineering as a career. This is particularly true for children in lower-income areas and children within under-represented groups in engineering, for example females.

As an Engineer Role Model, you can help change this by highlighting to students at a young age the diverse opportunities engineering offers before they develop bias.

The STEPS Young Engineers Award Volunteer Programme 2025 is now open for applications. We are looking for engineers from all backgrounds (including students and retired engineers) to visit a primary school class taking part in the STEPS Young Engineers Award at the end of November.

The STEPS Volunteer Engineer programme is the only nationwide engineering outreach programme to be certified by Investing in Volunteers. Through the programme, volunteer engineers receive resources and support to make the school visit experience as easy and impactful as possible.

Sign up for one of the training workshops taking place in September to apply or simply to find out more with no obligation.

*Please note: all applicants must complete a training workshop in the academic year of their visit to comply with our Investing in Volunteers standard.
