The Engineers Ireland Diversity Group was formed to examine diversity among our members, which number 25,000 island-wide.

Led by John Byrne, director of sectoral engagement, a group was established with Majella Henchion, Chartered Engineer, being chosen to chair the group.

Inaugural meeting of Engineers Ireland's Diversity Group in 2019

The area of diversity is so broad and with that in mind, the group decided their initial focus would be on gender balance in the profession, given how our female membership make up 12.5% of our membership total.

Of benefit to female members

A strategy session was held and the group decided to concentrate on three areas that they felt may be of benefit to our female members. These areas include attracting more female students into engineering courses; keeping the women who have already chosen engineering careers in engineering; and getting women, who have qualified as engineers and left the profession, to return.

To assist in achieving the goals of the group we are looking at the feasibility of establishing a Women in Engineering Group for our members and we have drafted a survey to gauge the level of interest.

The link to this survey is here and we would be grateful if you could take a few moments to complete the questionnaire.

Your feedback is important to us and we will be publishing the results of the survey in the coming months.

The survey will remain open until mid-July and please feel free to share with anybody who you may feel would be interested in it.
