Nurturing a learning culture in hybrid and multi-site work environments was the focal point at Learning from Leaders – Creating the Environment for Learning, an Engineers Ireland event for CPD Accredited Employers that took place in the EXO building on 23 May. The panel discussion set out to explore how companies can create a learning culture in a hybrid world of work; manage learning across cultures, generations and multi-site settings; understand how the physical environment impacts learning; and develop talent and progress careers at all levels in organisations.

David McRedmond, CEO of An Post; Carmel Walsh, Chief People Officer at Jones Engineering; and Seamus Doyle, Associate Director at OCSC Consulting Engineers comprised the expert panel in which the three senior leaders spoke about their learning journey and the diverse challenges they have faced in their career.

David McRedmond called out the importance of having a learning strategy and vision that accounts for the environment organisations are operating in. This includes awareness of purpose and employee well-being.

Listening to your learners was emphasised: recognising our modern multi-generational and diverse workforces where one size does not fit all. This, the panel agreed, allows workplaces to develop learning interventions that are the most effective.

Finally, a unanimous message from the three speakers was to invest in learning – in people, in time, in modern facilities and technologies, and in branding learning collateral so that it engages the learner.

Learning from Leaders:
Learning from Leaders is a knowledge-sharing series developed by Engineers Ireland for CPD Accredited Employers and is an invite-only event. The CPD Accredited Employer Standard is designed to help organisations improve the competence of their engineers, developing employees who are agile and adaptable, creating a workforce that is encouraged to create and innovate, and develop new solutions. Organisations that have achieved the Standard find they are better placed to deal with business change and disruption, while also being capable of attracting and retaining better workforce talent.
