Higher Level Mathematics participation has reached a new high, with 26,157 students sitting the subject in 2026, an increase of about 12% compared with 2025. Some Engineering-related subjects also recorded significant growth, with Higher Level Engineering, Construction Studies, Technology, and Design & Communication attracting increased numbers of candidates. In total, Higher Level STEM subject sittings increased by more than 9% compared to 2025, highlighting the continued strengthening of Ireland's STEM talent pipeline.

Damien Owens, Director General of Engineers Ireland said: 

It is particularly encouraging to see growing numbers of students choosing STEM subjects. The strong uptake of Higher-Level Mathematics compared to previous years demonstrates the enthusiasm and talent of Ireland's young people and provides a positive foundation for addressing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. 

Whether students achieve exactly the results they hoped for or not, it is important to remember that there are many pathways to a successful and rewarding career and engineering offers opportunities to make a real difference in areas across society such as housing, infrastructure, climate action, energy, digital technologies and healthcare, and there are multiple routes into the profession." 

Engineering remains one of Ireland's most in-demand professions, with engineers playing a central role in delivering critical national priorities, including housing delivery, transport infrastructure, renewable energy, water services, manufacturing, digitalisation and technological innovation.  

Engineers Ireland encourages students considering their next steps to explore the wide range of engineering and technology programmes available through the CAO, apprenticeships and other alternative pathways. Regardless of today's results, students have a wealth of opportunities available to develop their talents and contribute to shaping Ireland's future.

  • 26,157 students sat Higher Level Mathematics in 2026, up 11.5% on 2025.
