Mark Davies, a mechanical engineer, joined the University of Limerick in 1989 following undergraduate study at the University of Bath, postgraduate research at the University of Cambridge, and a postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University’s Whittle Laboratory.

From the outset he brought an inspiring combination of intellectual precision, energy and ambition to Limerick that would shape the development of the interrelated fields of fluid mechanics and thermofluids research in Ireland for more than three decades.
Unlock practical innovation
His scholarship ranged widely across thermofluids engineering. He made significant contributions to gas turbine research, electronics cooling, advanced instrumentation and, later, microfluidic technologies. What distinguished Mark’s work was not simply its breadth, but the clarity with which he connected fundamental physical principles to applied engineering challenges. He had an instinct for identifying where rigorous fluid dynamics could unlock practical innovation.
During the 1990s, he served as Head of Department, providing steady leadership during a formative period for engineering at UL. At the turn of the millennium, he founded the Stokes Institute, establishing it as a centre of excellence in fluid dynamics and thermofluids engineering.
Under his direction, the Institute became synonymous with high-quality research, strong industry engagement and the cultivation of international collaborations. At a time when national supports for research were limited, Mark raised funding from the European Union’s Framework schemes and directly from industry, in addition to backing from Enterprise Ireland. His breadth of applications spanned from the microscale – thermal challenges in electronic devices – to the large scale, such as heat transfer in gas turbines for power generation.
In the early 2000s, Mark was instrumental in initiating pioneering work on droplet-based microfluidics at UL, at a time when the field was still emerging globally. He approached this new domain with characteristic curiosity and entrepreneurial drive, immediately recognising its potential for transformative impact in diagnostics and biotechnology. This vision ultimately led to the creation of two successful spin-out companies, Stokes Bio and Hooke Bio. Stokes Bio was later acquired by multinational Life Technologies in what was widely reported at the time as one of the highest valuations achieved by a pre-revenue Irish technology company, underscoring the commercial impact of the research initiated in his laboratory.
Each spin-out enterprise was underpinned by innovations in droplet-based microfluidics, exploiting microscale droplets that act as individual, easy to manipulate test samples for applications such as diagnostics and drug discovery. The achievement demonstrated how deep scientific expertise could translate into transformative industrial value without compromising academic rigour.
Dedicated and generous educator
Alongside his research leadership, Mark was a dedicated and generous educator. He supervised more than 30 doctoral students and mentored numerous postdoctoral researchers throughout his career. Many of his former students now hold senior positions in academia, industry and public research organisations across the world. His influence is evident not only in published papers and patents, but in the intellectual confidence and independence of those he trained.
Colleagues remember his analytical sharpness, his enthusiasm for new ideas, and his unwavering belief that engineering research should aim for both technical excellence and societal relevance. He held high standards – for himself and for those around him – but coupled them with encouragement and a genuine investment in the success of others.
Mark Davies leaves a profound legacy within the University of Limerick and the wider engineering community. Through his scholarship, institutional leadership and entrepreneurial initiative, he helped establish Ireland as a recognised contributor to modern thermofluids and microfluidics research. His impact will endure in the laboratories he built, the companies he founded, and the many engineers and scientists whose careers he shaped.
He is greatly missed by colleagues, students and collaborators, and remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
