Technical analysis of concrete blocks – Monday, 17 January 2022 at 8:00pm 

In this online presentation, Dr Robbie Goodhue will discuss the technical analysis of concrete blockwork. In 2017 an expert Government report found that almost 6,000 homes across Donegal, Mayo, Sligo and Clare were affected by defective concrete blockwork attributed to excess mica or pyrite. The degradation of concrete blocks highlights the need for detailed laboratory analysis of both the raw materials and the manufactured building materials. Watch Dr Goodhue explain the procedures used in Irish standard I.S.465 to assess the risk of degradation of concrete blocks; provide opinion on the current knowledge gaps; and propose new methods for assessment of concrete block durability.

Source to Tap – exploring measures to improve local water quality – Wednesday, 19 January 2022 at 1:00pm 

In this online presentation Fionnuala Bonner,  Source to Tap Project Officer, and part of the Asset Strategy Team at Irish Water, will provide an overview of the Source to Tap project and its Land Incentive scheme. It is the first of its kind, a cross border farming scheme which is being trialled in the River Derg catchment. This scheme provides landowners in this catchment area with grants, so that they can make significant changes in farming practices for the protection of the water quality in the river Derg.

The natural gas system in Ireland is the backbone of energy-supply in the country. It is an extensively engineered system, removed from public conscious, located underground, which is a key component of our country’s ever- increasing demand and energy mix. In this presentation David Roche, Senior Technical Inspector – Gas Safety Framework, Energy Safety Division with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities and Barry Donnelly Senior Technical Inspector – Gas Safety Framework, Energy Safety Division with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities will describe the natural gas system in Ireland.
