Course Overview

Drones have revolutionised the way engineers and project managers collect and analyse spatial data. This course provides a step-by-step introduction to drone operations for photogrammetry, data capture techniques, and the use of photogrammetry software to create accurate 3D models and maps. Participants will gain essential skills in planning drone flights, capturing high-quality aerial images, processing datasets, and interpreting outputs for real-world applications.

Course Aim

The aim of this course is to equip beginners with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to confidently use drones for photogrammetry and 3D modelling, enabling them to apply these techniques across a variety of professional contexts.

Course Programme

Introduction to Drone Photogrammetry

  • What is photogrammetry?
  • Applications across industries.

Drone Fundamentals

  • Types of drones and sensors / choosing the correct craft.

Flight Planning and Data Capture

  • Mission planning for aerial surveys.
  • Best practices for image capture.

Photogrammetry Software Tools

  • Introduction to popular software (e.g., Pix4D, Agisoft Metashape, RealityCapture).
  • Uploading and processing datasets.

3D Modelling and Mapping

  • Generating point clouds, orthomosaics, and textured 3D models.

Practical Project

  • From drone flight to final 3D model.
  • Review and feedback session.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of photogrammetry and its practical applications.
  • Operate drones safely and effectively for aerial surveying tasks.
  • Plan and execute drone flights to capture suitable data for 3D modelling.
  • Process aerial images using photogrammetry software to create accurate models and maps.
  • Apply photogrammetry workflows to personal projects or professional work.

A drone will be provided on the day but feel free to bring your own.

Prerequisties

Candidates are required to undertake the "Drone Compliance and Operating Principles" course or equivalent.

Who should Attend?

Professionals wishing to upskill, improve workflows and attain a grass roots knowledge of mapping and 3D modelling.
