Course Aim
This one-day course aims to provide delegates with an understanding of the concepts and methods associated with the delivery of Road Safety Audits in Ireland. Delegates will gain an understanding of the standards applying to Road Safety Auditing, Road Safety Principles, the Road Safety Audit Method as well as risk assessment for the Road Safety Audit Process.
Course Overview
The main objective of the Road Safety Audit Process is to minimise the severity and the frequency of collisions on our roads. Collisions are how traffic engineers refer to road traffic accidents. In the eyes of a traffic engineer, there’s no such thing as an accident.
This one-day course is an introduction to Road Safety Audits to create an understanding of what a Road Safety Audit is and what it is not, when are they required, and why they are necessary. This course does not form part of the TII approval scheme for becoming a Road Safety Auditor; however, it will provide an insight as to what is required to become an Audit Team Member and eventually an Audit Team leader.

- The Road Safety Audit Process and the general principles of road safety
- The Road Safety Audit Method

Who Should Attend?
This course is intended for engineers, planners, architects, designers, road builders or traffic management specialists looking to gain an introduction to the concepts and processes behind road safety auditing. It is not part of the qualification process required to become an auditor; however, it will guide you on to the correct path.
Trainer Profile
Barry Bessant has over 20 years’ experience in the design and planning of traffic management schemes. He has relevant Health & Safety academic qualifications and is considered to be an industry expert.
Barry attained the status of Traffic Safety & Control Officer [TSCO] accredited by Land Based Training Organisation [LANTRA] (UK) and is one of only four persons qualified to teach Temporary Traffic Management Planning & Design on behalf of the LASNTG.
Some of the major projects Barry has been involved with include:
- Dublin Airport Authority [DAA] Terminal 2
- Phases B100 and C100 of the LUAS Cross City Tram System
- Boherboy Sewerage Scheme
- Design and implementation of Dublin Port Directions for Temporary TM Works together with a Permit-To-Work [PTW] system
- Dublin City Council C3-22 / C4-23 Urban Works Programme
- NTA South Dublin County Council Bus Connects Project
Finally, Barry is also registered with the Road Safety Authority [RSA] as an Approved Driving Instructor [ADI].
