The recent update from the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science to colour vision entry requirements for craft apprenticeships is a major step toward removing unnecessary barriers and widening access for aspiring apprentices.

Under the new guidelines, colour vision testing is no longer mandatory for most craft apprenticeships, including trades such as plumbing, painting and decorating, motor mechanics, and aircraft maintenance. Employers may choose to arrange optometrist-led screening, with additional testing available to help make reasonable accommodations where needed. Electrical and Electrical Instrumentation apprenticeships remain exceptions, requiring candidates to pass the Ishihara test or achieve a 4 CAD unit threshold on appeal.

These changes bring Ireland in line with European best practice, promoting inclusivity while safeguarding safety and quality. They are a vital move toward broadening access and strengthening the future talent pipeline.
