DCU and IT Carlow launch new Level 9 Certificate in Innovative Materials for industry 4.0

Materials professionals are in global demand by industry for their skills in combining innovative new materials with critical technological advances. This 30-credit course has been designed to link traditional and industry 4.0 technologies with materials selection and sustainability in design and manufacturing to help Irish manufacturing and engineering companies to become more competitive through digital transformation.

For those who want to upskill in materials processing technologies and concepts

This Certificate in Innovative Materials for Industry 4.0 is an advanced manufacturing programme for professionals who want to upskill in materials processing technologies and concepts for industry 4.0.

Graduates of this programme will potentially work cross functionally and manage complex product improvement campaigns, throughout the entire product design life cycle, in responsive, adaptive and connected manufacturing environments.

Students will gain specialist training in underlying scientific fundamentals, practical materials handling and analysis techniques. This will make them attractive to  potential employers  while also equipping them for further study at advanced postgraduate level .

In addition to this, graduates will be eligible to apply for the Master of Science in Engineering Research and Innovation, where the modules will be recognised as prior learning.

The programme will be delivered using state-of-the-art technologies, in virtual learning environments and through extended reality experiences.

The programme will be delivered in four-week block (module) units and each technical module can be applied for individually, as a standalone micro-credential qualification. All programme content will be delivered online, including project work.

Modules on this course include:

  • Advanced Manufacturing for Industry 4.0 (5 Credits)
  • Materials Selection in Sustainable Engineering Design (5 credits)
  • Post Processing for Smart Industry (5 credits)
  • Data Analysis for Advanced Manufacturing (5 credits)
  • Work Based Project (10 Credits)

This programme is ideally suited to graduates with qualifications in engineering or science, or international graduates with equivalent qualifications, who are working in the Irish manufacturing industry.

This course will be led by Professor Dermot Brabazon, School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at DCU and Dr David Culliton from the Department of Aerospace, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering (AME) at IT Carlow.
