“Digital transformation presents both opportunities and challenges for Ireland”- Engineers Ireland welcomes new National Digital Strategy

Engineers Ireland, the representative body for professional engineers, has welcomed the Government’s publication of the new National Digital Strategy, ‘Harnessing Digital - The Digital Ireland Framework’, stating that the strategy sets out a much-needed roadmap for Ireland in terms of digital policy, future skills and required infrastructure.

Caroline Spillane, Director General of Engineers Ireland, said: “We have called for an updated National Digital Strategy, most recently in our State of Ireland Report 2021, Infrastructure and a Digital Future. It is positive to see the Government responding with the new strategy which addresses many of the issues brought forward in our report, particularly in regard to infrastructure, digitalisation, and skills.

“Ireland is now a global digital hub, and we need to ensure that our infrastructure is robust enough to support the increased rate of digitalisation. Additionally, a digital society is built by people, so attracting talent is essential for maintaining existing systems while preparing for the future. We need to have the necessary skills not just amongst our graduates, but also in our existing workforce who should be able to avail of upskilling and training, where needed.  These are not just issues for the tech sector, they affect every aspect of Irish society. Every company is now a digital company in some form. Most people in Ireland avail of, and rely on, digital services for everyday tasks, for work, for health and for leisure. Even those who are not directly engaged with the digital world, will almost certainly rely on others who are, for their continued quality of life,” Ms Spillane added.

Professor Orla Feely, President of Engineers Ireland, stated: “Over recent years, digitalisation has been woven into the fabric of society and business, including engineering, at every level. Most recently, the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of many digital solutions that would have otherwise taken years to become mainstream. Throughout the pandemic, Irish engineers have risen to the challenge and supported the functioning of society and the economy through digital innovation. This digital transformation will continue, presenting both opportunities and challenges for Ireland. Engineers Ireland looks forward to working with all stakeholders to maximise those opportunities and meet those challenges."
