Engineering Endeavour of 2020? Vote now, public urged

Engineers Ireland and ESB are calling on members of the public to view six winning engineering projects shortlisted as part of the Engineering Excellence Digital Series and to vote for their preferred ‘Engineering Endeavour of 2020’ by midnight on Friday, December 11.

Ranging from the construction of Ireland’s longest bridge to the response of an alliance to the COVID-19 pandemic with the delivery of essential PPE and medical gas infrastructure, the six winners were chosen by a team of judges following an open, free-to-enter competition organised by Engineers Ireland and supported by ESB. The aim of the overall initiative is to recognise and showcase inspiring engineering endeavour and its positive impact on society.

Videos showcasing the six winners and their projects have been recently profiled on Engineers Ireland’s social channels. Both the professional body for engineers in Ireland and ESB are now encouraging the public to have their say, and to view each of the six short videos and vote for the one project which they believe should be awarded the accolade of ‘Engineering Endeavour of 2020.’

Six shortlisted projects

  1. N25 New Ross Bypass PPP incorporating the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge over the River Barrow, a joint entry from Arup and CFCSL (Designers), BAM and Dragados (Contractors)
  2. The Coastal Mobility Route by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council with project partners, Clonmel Enterprises and the National Transport Authority
  3. The COVID Alliance – How Ireland’s engineers rallied to the COVID-19 emergency by The COVID Alliance, comprising of over 50 commercial, academic and state organisations
  4. I-Form’s Rapid Response Digital Manufacturing Hub by I-Form, the SFI Research Centre for Advanced Manufacturing
  5. ADVANCER Project by Thermo King and Trane Technologies
  6. Coppermills Water Treatment Works New Roughing Filters – The innovative use of collaboration and digital engineering tools to protect London’s water supply by Irish engineering company, EPS Group in collaboration with Thames Water; Skanska, MWH and Balfour Beatty (SMB)

Caroline Spillane, director general, Engineers Ireland, said: “Engineering is integral to modern life. The initiatives profiled in our new Engineering Excellence Digital Series showcase the many creative solutions engineers implement for communities in Ireland and overseas, whether that is through keeping our healthcare workers and their patients safe during the COVID-19 crisis; or engineering, building and infrastructure work or highlighting the work of those who are developing innovative and sustainable solutions for society.

“We look forward to the public and our broad membership engaging with the series, viewing the videos, being inspired and voting for their preferred project for 2020.”

Pat O’Doherty, chief executive, ESB, said: “The engineering initiatives profiled in the Engineering Excellence Digital Series remind us of the impact that the engineering profession has on the daily lives of individuals, families and communities, so I would really encourage as many people as possible to view the videos and vote for the project that they believe should receive the title of ‘Engineering Endeavour of 2020.’

"Hopefully, by giving people a glimpse into the diverse ways that Ireland’s engineers contribute to society, we will inspire future generations to consider engineering as a meaningful and exciting career choice.”
