Farrans Construction join AITM cluster, third level institutions and organisations to inspire future engineering talent

Farrans Construction and the midlands-based Advanced Technologies in Manufacturing (ATIM) Cluster have joined academic institutions and engineering organisations across Ireland to host Transition Year (TY) students for the forthcoming STEPS Engineering Your Future work experience placement programme.

These hands-on placements involving 21 partner organisations/academic institutions, are designed to provide Transition Year students with a meaningful and practical insight into engineering at third level and as a career. During the programme, which runs up to five consecutive days, students attend interactive talks and presentations; get hands-on experience with group-based activities; visit local industry and meet engineers at various stages in their careers.

With placements for TY students now available from March – May 2023, Farrans Construction and the ATIM Cluster will now join ATU Galway, ATU Sligo, DCU, DBFL Consulting Engineers, DKIT, the Environmental Protection Agency, Fingleton White, Maynooth University, MTU Cork, Palliare, SETU Carlow, SETU Waterford, Trinity College Dublin, TU Dublin, TUS MMW- Athlone Campus, University College Dublin and University of Galway to inspire and engage the next generation of engineering talent.

Liebherr Container Cranes based in Kerry and Combilift in Monaghan will also host students on a STEPS Engineering Your Future ‘apprenticeship’ programme, which will provide students with a custom apprenticeship work experience placement where they will receive guidance from working and qualified apprentices.

Encouraging Transition Year students to apply for the STEPS Engineering Your Future programme, Damien Owens, Director General of Engineers Ireland said: “The STEPS Engineering Your Future programme has grown from a pilot with UCD in 2012 to now having 21 project partners, providing even more students with the opportunity to explore the engineering profession. With applications for placements now open, I would encourage Transition Year students who would like to play a role in transforming society to apply for a place today.”

Established in 2012 by Engineers Ireland’s STEPS programme – supported by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and industry leaders Arup, EPA, ESB, Intel and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) - the immersive engineering work experience initiative has provided over 3,000 Transition Year students to date with the opportunity to explore the engineering profession.
