The Irish Concrete Society recently launched its 2018 Fundamentals of Concrete Technology course. Commencing on September 7, 2018, in University College Dublin, the course provides participants with essential information on concrete technology and construction. The programme includes two half-days of lectures and a half-day on site, with time also spent in a civil engineering laboratory carrying out some common tests. The course, which was developed by members of the society, is delivered by experienced professionals from industry and academia. Since its introduction in 2012, more than 200 architects, consulting engineers, site engineers and construction professionals have attended and gained a practical and invaluable introduction to a material used on all construction projects. The range of topics covered includes: an introduction to the constituents and properties of concrete; an overview of formwork, pre-pour checks and placing techniques; guidance on compacting, finishing, curing and testing of hardened concrete; site-based activities that includes a live concrete pour. Participants have the opportunity to sit the Institute of Concrete Technology’s Stage 1 exam. This scheme enables delegates to achieve a formal certificate in recognition of their success in mastering the basic principles of concrete technology and construction. This also serves as the first step for those who wish to progress in their studies.
