Precision drive system specialist maxon has released a new handbook to help engineers select DC motors and drive system products. Selection of DC Drives – Guidelines with Calculations provides a systematic approach to drive selection.

The new book also explains the formulae and their relationships to confirm drive system choice.

The book includes a six-step flowchart, providing a clear path to select the drive system specific to application requirements. The chapters dedicated to each drive system component also offer the formulae required to select the right product at each stage. Illustrations and descriptions of the variables bring the formulae to life and help to clarify the requirements of drive systems for real-world applications.

Along with an overview of kinematics; force, torque, and power; and the mechanics of drive systems, the book includes details on the selection of individual drive system components including DC and BLDC (brushless DC) motors, gearheads, encoders, as well as controllers for speed, position, and multi-axis applications.
