Butler Manufacturing Services Ltd (BMS) is one of Ireland's longest-established manufacturers and innovators in the sewage treatment and surface water management markets.

Established in 1986, we have exported to 40 plus countries worldwide via its market leading Blivet ‘all in one’ package sewage treatment system.

Rot/corrosion-proof fibreglass

Its head office, factory and R&D centre are based just outside Longford town, where BMS manufactures most of its products in rot/corrosion-proof fibreglass or GRP.

BMS Blivet WWTP installed in Arklow on a temporary basis until the main Arklow plant is upgraded.

BMS focuses on the production of added value package products that are built to last and are delivered to site ‘ready to go’. Indeed, due to BMS ISO 9001 quality management system many of its original products manufactured more than 30 years ago are still performing well.

Apart from being a manufacturer, BMS has built up an excellent knowledge base in sewage treatment and surface water management. BMS offers free design for any project requiring package sewage treatment or a surface water management solution.

Indeed, we are often brought in to work with consulting engineers to help solve the toughest of problems, whether it is a sewage treatment system for variable flows, tight discharge standards or for temporary use where the local municipal system is overloaded to an attenuation/infiltration system with a high capacity or an unusual configuration.

BMS conducts regular free CPD sessions with consulting engineers on sewage treatment and Sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) sizing and selection.

The feedback we get from these sessions is excellent, as it allows the exchange of ideas between BMS and engineers and has led to quite a few product innovations and services.

Invested in bespoke software

For example, BMS invested in bespoke software, which allows us to design a surface water system including attenuation/infiltration, interceptors, silt traps, vortex silt/oil/debris separators and outlet flow controls specific to site conditions/location.

Overall, this means that BMS provides a fully certified ‘one stop shop’ for all surface water requirements including geotextiles/geomembranes. We can even install/supervise and certify the systems.

BMS was founded on the basis of an innovation grant and keeping true to this ethos, BMS is constantly developing new products and refining existing ones, for example, the Blivet UV and Stormbreaker Defender.

The BMS Blivet is the most compact ‘all in one’ system available. Even though primarily used as a permanent solution, it is also ideal for temporary treatment, as it is completely self-contained and can be placed above/below ground without a concrete surround.

This design was taken one step further by integrating a UV disinfection system. The Blivet UV has been deployed on numerous construction sites in Ireland/UK to treat the sewage generated on site.

Sustainable alternative to tankering

It offers a sustainable alternative to tankering, with an excellent payback. The Stormbreaker Defender was developed in conjunction with NUI Galway. It can be placed upstream or downstream of attenuation system/watercourses. It is excellent value and manufactured/designed in Ireland.

Overall, BMS is here to help engineers whether working on the design of sewage treatment or surface water management projects or offering free CPD sessions.

BMS an engineer's best friend if seeking 'one stop shop' for surface water requirements

Recent media reports have highlighted the need for urgent action to be taken to protect Ireland’s rivers, streams and lakes, which are at serious risk of pollution from waste water flowing, untreated, into the country’s water courses.

The cause is largely down to badly designed - or poorly maintained - septic tanks and private drainage systems. It is a ticking ecological time bomb as well as a potential threat to public health for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

“Raw sewage from the equivalent of 86,000 people is flowing into Irish waterways every day, a health threat the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says is not being dealt with quickly enough.” The Irish Times, February 14, 2019, 'Environmental Ticking Time Bomb'.

Traditionally, Irish householders and businesses have managed private waste water on-site using septic tanks. But a septic tank removes only around 30 per cent of the active pollutants in the effluent, which is why their discharges pose such a threat to water courses and ground water.

David Best, commercial specification manager, Ireland, for the Klargester product rat Kingspan, says: “Sewage treatment plants by contrast are highly efficient, treating around 95 per cent of the pollutants within the waste matter. They should be considered the solution of choice near to surface water or for any sensitive sites.”

Kingspan Klargester CPD – Guide to Sewage Treatment Plants

A team of experts from Kingspan Klargester, the world-leading waste water management range, in association with Engineers Ireland and CIBSE, will be offering a CPD to key professions involved in the management of wastewater, including civil engineers and architects entitled: 'A Guide to Sewage Treatment Plants'.

Topics covered include:
1.) Understanding waste water treatment
2.) An introduction to sewage treatment systems
3.) Site assessments
4.) Sizing commercial systems and seasonal applications
5.) Typical installation process
6.) Dos and don’ts

There are four CPD sessions being delivered across these venues:
September 13: The Kingspan IKON 'innovation centre' Kingscourt, Co Cavan; and September 20: The Kingspan Stadium Belfast.

The CPD is free to attend and worth one hour of CPD credit. A free tour of both the Kingspan Stadium and the Ikon is offered for delegates, and complimentary lunch with refreshments on arrival is also provided.
