Tyndall’s Peter O’Brien receives major European semiconductor award

Tyndall National Institute, based at University College Cork, has announced that Professor Peter O’Brien, head of research for photonics packaging & systems integration, has been awarded the SEMI European Award 2025 at the Industry Strategy Symposium Europe (ISS Europe) in Sopot, Poland.

SEMI is a global industry association representing companies and research organisations across the semiconductor and electronics development and manufacturing supply chain.

The award, one of the most prestigious honours in the semiconductor industry, recognises leaders whose work has significantly advanced global semiconductor innovation.

Pioneering contributions to photonics electronic packaging

Prof O’Brien was recognised for his pioneering contributions to photonics electronic packaging, his leadership in Europe’s Semiconductor Pilot Lines, and his commitment to developing specialised training programmes that strengthen the semiconductor talent pipeline.

“It is a great honour to receive the SEMI European Award for 2025,” said Prof O’Brien. “Through this award, I would like to recognise my many collaborators around the world.

"Working together, we accelerate research and development, turning early ideas into impactful breakthroughs. I would also like to thank SEMI for its leadership in fostering collaboration and building roadmaps that illuminate the way forward.”
