Tyndall's Prof Holger Claussen elected to Royal Irish Academy

The Royal Irish Academy (RIA) celebrated Admittance Day recently, welcoming 28 newly elected members for their outstanding contributions to the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, as well as their dedication to public service. Among them is Tyndall’s Professor Holger Claussen, a pioneering researcher in wireless communications.

Professor Holger Claussen is head of the Wireless Communications Laboratory at Tyndall National Institute and Professor of Wireless Communications at University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin.

His pioneering work in small cell networks and self-optimising systems has revolutionised how modern wireless networks are designed, deployed, and used, advancing telecommunications from 3G and 4G to 5G and beyond.

Shaping global wireless connectivity

With more than 140 journal and conference publications, 89 granted patent families, and 37 pending patents, Prof Claussen’s research has played a critical role in shaping global wireless connectivity.

At Tyndall, he is building up research teams in Radio Frequency, Access, Protocols, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Quantum Systems, inventing the future of wireless communications.

Prof Claussen said: "It is a great honour to be elected as a member of the Royal Irish Academy. I look forward to contributing to the academy’s mission of building a more sustainable and inclusive future through knowledge and collaboration, particularly in the fields of Wireless Communications and AI, which will profoundly impact society in the years to come."

Prof Claussen’s election reinforces Tyndall’s position as a global leader in cutting-edge communications research. His work continues to shape the future of wireless connectivity, ensuring that Ireland remains at the forefront of telecommunications innovation.
