Thomond in the Engineers Journal

My engineering life Q&A: John Coleman

Former chair of MEETA Asset Management and Engineers Ireland's Thomond Region, John Coleman started his engineering life as a fitter and welder before going on to earn his master's degree. He admires Harry Ferguson, who developed the modern agricultural tractor and its three-point linkage system; in his spare time, he loves gardening and, together with his wife Sheila, he likes to visit his daughter and her family in Australia.

Small is beautiful: The future use of nuclear power in Ireland

Professor Tim McGloughlin writes that small modular reactor nuclear technology – suitably designed and commissioned and underpinned by appropriate regulation and legislation – can enable Ireland to become energy independent.

My Engineering Life Q&A: Lorraine Corcoran

Like one of her heroes, Chris Hadfield, mechanical engineer Lorraine Corcoran's love for the profession started in space; as a child, she adored Star Wars and ET. A big fan of co-educational learning, she also recommends that anybody who is thinking of studying engineering at third level 'secures a course that includes a work placement, as the experience that I gained during my seven years with Hewlett-Packard has stood to me and allowed me to move into different industries which eventually led to me becoming the technical director and co-owner of LYNOSLIFE'.

A novel, non-destructive methodology for the optimisation of deformed heat pipe structures

Joseph Mooney, winner of the 23rd Annual Sir Bernard Crossland Symposium, on using X-ray tomography and pore network modelling to improve the effectiveness of electronics cooling solutions.

Dr TP Hardiman: An appreciation

In this age of specialisation, Tom Hardiman was a genuine polymath. In a career spanning seven decades, he provided intellectual leadership and made far-reaching contributions to Irish industry, commerce, finance, education, science, public service and cultural life.

Computational investigation into the effect of angle-mounted impellers on mixing

The main aim of this research, writes University of Limerick chemical and biochemical engineering student Úna Real, is to investigate the possible advantages of using an angle-mounted Rushton impeller in a mixing tank.
