Realised Vision

In 1999, to mark the end of the millennium, the Engineers Ireland West Region committee developed the Realised Vision website featuring noteworthy engineering projects in the West region or projects of national and international significance that were led by engineers from the West region.

The information contained on the Realised Vision website was moved to the Engineers Ireland website in 2024. Click the link below to read about the several engineering projects, infrastructure development and personalities which were deemed important to the West region by the Engineers Ireland West Region committee as we welcomed the third millennium.

The development of ICT and energy in Ireland

Author: David McAuley, R&D programme manager, Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland Ireland currently houses 135MW of data centres. This accounts for about 3% of national electricity demand and is growing rapidly. The ICT industry worldwide is no stranger to the connection between energy and sustainability, and actively seeks to include renewable supply and efficiency in its portfolio of solutions. Time constraints and creativity in the medical device sector

Working without time or resource constraints could be portrayed as the perfect creative environment, but can ‘less’ sometimes lead to ‘more’ – and when might that be the case? In this article, we examine the positive impact of time constraints on new product development (NPD), drawing on our research in a medical devices company. Early academic literature suggested that control hindered creativity, as it was seen as reducing freedom. However, attention has more recently turned to the ...

‘Fionnuala’s’ boring journey nearing its end

The Corrib gas project is one of the most significant engineering projects ever undertaken in Ireland. It is now in its final phase of construction, which involves laying the onshore pipeline from the landfall site at Glengad to the Bellanaboy Bridge Gas Terminal. The onshore pipeline is 8.3km long and 4.9km of this will be installed in a tunnel, most of which will run under Sruwaddacon Bay, in north-west Mayo. When completed, the tunnel will be the longest tunnel in Ireland and the ...
