Organisation profile
The origins of Roadstone go back to the early 1930’s when two Dublin brothers Tom and Donal Roche started a sand and gravel haulage business operating from a small yard at Inchicore in West Dublin. Their company developed steadily during the 30’s and 40’s and a new company, Roadstone, launched in 1949. Roadstone now operate at over 40 locations nationwide providing high quality products such as blocks, concrete, mortars, grolime, asphalt, masonry, paving, and stonefill to the Irish market.
Training aim
Roadstone's General Aggregates and Fill Advice gives an understanding of the production methods involved in producing aggregates and looks at the properties of aggregates that impact on the user.
Learning objectives
To examine the range of standards against which materials should be specified, produced and supplied including EN 13242 Aggregates for Unbound and SR21
To discuss aggregate properties such as PSV, flakiness and Los Angeles abrasion value
To examine the legacy issues of reactive pyrite and how construction materials suppliers through quality control ensure that it is excluded from production stream
To examine recent changes to Annex E – Aggregates for use under concrete floors and footpaths
Course outline
Roadstone's General Aggregates and Fill Advice gives an overview of granular fills, where they should be used, their properties and their applications in engineering. The standards and guidance documents against which aggregates and fill are produced and specified and recent changes to such documents are discussed. Additionally Roadstone's General Aggregates and Fill Advice includes a discussion on reactive pyrite and how the construction industry is managing its use.
