The Energy, Environment and Climate Action Division is for professional and student engineers with an interest in energy engineering, managing the environmental impact of economic activities and supporting ambitious climate action in the engineering community. A primary objective of the Division is to support the development and deployment of energy technologies and policies to enable a rapid transition to a fully decarbonised, environmentally sustainable, secure and cost-effective energy system in Ireland.

New materials and designs can make a leading source of renewable energy both greener and cheaper, writes Tom Cassauwers.
Imagine heating your home from the ceiling, not from underfloor heating or radiators. Once installed like wallpaper, high-tech infrared fabric emits heat in a similar way to the sun’s rays. This could be a logical way to add low-carbon heat into existing homes that need retrofitting to improve energy efficiency, writes Michael Siebert, Nottingham Trent University.
You may have seen a wind turbine in the sea before, but chances are you were looking at a 'fixed' turbine – that is, one that sits on top of a foundation drilled into the seabed. For the new frontier of offshore wind power, the focus is on floating wind turbines, writes Emma Edwards, career development fellow in engineering, University of Oxford.
An analysis of the 2011 nuclear accident reveals a need for more preparation, training, and protocols for responding to low-probability accidents.
The first-of-its-kind system 'uses movable seawalls to generate electricity and then uses that electricity to operate the system itself'.
The huge upscaling of wind turbines across the nation is no longer just a policy move; it is a transformative shift in our energy landscape, reminiscent of historical milestones such as Ardnacrusha and Moneypoint, but with a modern twist, writes John Aston.
