As Ireland works towards its net-zero energy goals, the role of Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) engineers is increasingly important in designing heating systems that balance compliance, sustainability, and operational efficiency.

To support this, Grant provides fully integrated heating solutions for new build homes which combine highly efficient heat pumps, integrated hot water storage, heat emitters and smart controls, alongside HVO-ready condensing boiler technology for existing properties.

Innovative heat pump technology

At the centre of Grant’s integrated heating offering for new builds is the Aerona R290 air-to-water heat pump and the Grant Integrated Unit, hot water cylinder. These technologies are designed to operate in harmony, ensuring that both heating and hot water demands are met while maximising overall system efficiency.

Aerona R290 air-to-water heat pump.

The Aerona R290 achieves A+++ ErP ratings with SCOPs up to 4.88:1 and uses natural refrigerant R290 which makes it one of the most environmentally friendly heat pumps available. Available in 5 models with outputs from 4kW to 16kW, the Aerona R290 range provides engineers with the flexibility to correctly size systems for a wide range of dwellings.

When paired with the Grant Integrated Unit, system design and installation are streamlined. The hot water cylinder is pre-plumbed and pre-wired, reducing commissioning time whilst ensuring consistency across developments. For M&E professionals, this translates into fewer design variables and more predictable system performance across projects.

The Aerona Smart Controller controls the Aerona R290 heat pump by communicating directly with the unit, unlike third-party thermostats, which operate on simple on/off control. Designed with energy-conscious buildings in mind; this weather-compensated controller dynamically responds to external temperature changes, automatically optimising the heat pump’s output to reduce energy consumption and enhance thermal comfort throughout the year.

HVO biofuel for existing homes

While heat pumps are a popular choice for new builds, the challenge of decarbonising existing homes remains significant. Currently more than 680,000 Irish homes rely on oil-fired boilers and the use of HVO biofuel could provide a versatile and accessible fuel option to help these and rural and off-grid homes reduce their carbon footprints up to 88% compared to traditional fossil fuels

Speaking about the use of HVO biofuel in home heating, Keith Scully, training manager at Grant, said: “If every oil-fired boiler in Ireland were to use an HVO-biofuel blend, it would be the equivalent of retrofitting 160,000* homes with heat pumps. This involves making no adjustments to the boiler as long as the HVO blend is less than 30%. It really can help existing homes to achieve massive carbon reductions.”

All models within the Grant Vortex condensing boiler range are HVO-biofuel ready and work seamlessly with other Grant heating technologies including pre-plumbed hot water cylinders and heat emitters including Grant Afinia aluminium radiators and Grant Uflex underfloor heating, to provide a highly efficient home heating system.

Integrated approach

Grant’s integrated approach to providing home heating solutions for upgrades or new-builds simplifies the specification process while ensuring future-proofed performance and precise system design.

The company’s free-of-charge heating design service for new-builds and deep retrofit projects supports engineers with room-by-room heat loss calculations, schematics, and detailed technology specification to ensure all S.R. 50 / MCS and Part L building regulations are met. In parallel, Grant’s HVO-ready Vortex boilers provide hybrid flexibility, enabling existing housing stock to decarbonise without the disruption of a deep retrofit.

For M&E engineers delivering heating systems that must be sustainable, compliant, and operationally efficient, Grant’s technologies provide confidence from design stage to after care and long-term performance. Whether for a new build or an existing property, Grant can supply a highly efficient, sustainable heating system for properties of all sizes, ensuring it is a fit for today’s standards and future-proofed for the decades ahead.
