FormulaDIT arrived in Silverstone today to race their single‐seat race car at this year's Formula Student competition at the renowned F1 track. Formula Student is the largest student motorsport competition in the world. This year will be the biggest ever, with 149 university teams from 32 different countries. The team from Dublin Institute of Technology, who are all manufacturing and mechanical engineering degree students from Bolton Street college, have been working for the past year to design and build this year's car. The car will be judged on its speed, acceleration, handling and endurance, while the team will be tested on design, costing and business presentation skills. The car was officially unveiled on 19 June by John Morris, MD of Mondello Park Racing. Morris, a graduate of Bolton Street, praised the design and quality of the car and commended the team for their commitment and hard work throughout the year. Bill Reddington, one of the project supervisors at the college's School of Manufacturing and Design Engineering, thanked all the technical and academic staff throughout the various departments within Bolton Street, without whose help and support the project could not have been possible. He also thanked the sponsors, xElvin, Mondello, National Instruments, TDP, Rocofab, Galway Carbon and the DIT foundation. John Lawlor, head of the School of Manufacturing and Design Engineering, noted that many graduates from previous FormulaDIT teams were present at the launch. “These are the pioneers on whose work this year's team were able to draw and build upon,” he commented. “It’s great to see so many young people get involved with the project. The real purpose of FormulaDIT is to make engineering rewarding and exciting and to attract these bright young engineers of the future.” The team comprises of students Edward Elder, David O Callaghan, Darragh Kennedy, Kevin Irving, James Keown, Eoin McGeough, Garreth O’Doherty, Karl O'Sullivan, Neil Sheridan, Aibhne Doherty, Fearghal Nolan, Deirdre McGovern, Ronan Timmins, Ciaran Nolan, Liam Oliver, Peter May and Chris Costello. Supervising the project are Bill Reddington, Gerry Woods and Derek McEvoy, all from DIT’s Department of Manufacturing and Design Engineering. Follow the team’s progress at Silverstone from now until 7 July on Facebook (www.facebook.com/formuladit) or Twitter (@FormulaDIT).
