The first meeting of Engineers Ireland members in Hong Kong took place on Friday, June 6 at the Novotel Century Hotel on Hong Kong Island. Seven members attended and many knew each other from working on various projects. They welcomed the opportunity to meet and are keen to have more meetings or a Hong Kong region/grouping within Engineers Ireland. Virtually all of the engineers present work in the transportation sector – reflecting the amount of investment that has been made in providing additional lines to the metropolitan transport network. Most of the members who attended the event were either Irish or studied in Ireland. Gaining recognition by Engineers Ireland is well regarded by regional authorities and employers. Hong Kong is an ideal hub for south-east Asia and a considerable number of Engineers Ireland members use this location as a base from which to undertake projects across the region (about a third of the world’s population live in this timezone, which includes China, Indonesia, Philippines and Western Australia).
