IT Sligo Faculty of Engineering & Design has announced the approval of four new Level 8 Honours Degrees in Engineering, which are available on CAO for 2020/21 intake of first year students. This is the first time students will have a direct entry route to an honours general engineering course in the northwest region.

The degrees on offer are:

  • BEng (Honours) in General Engineering – Level 8 (CAO code SG341)
  • BEng (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering – Level 8 (CAO code - SG344)
  • BEng (Honours) in Robotics & Automation – Level 8 (CAO code - SG350)
  • BEng (Honours) in Electronics & Self Driving Technologies – Level 8 (CAO code - SG349)

Common first year

These new programmes, as well as the well established BEng (Honours) in Civil Engineering, will share a common first year and will facilitate the offering of a Level 8 General Entry on the CAO for students that have not decided on which field of engineering they want to study. Head of Faculty of Engineering & Design at IT Sligo, Úna Parsons, said this was an important aspect of the course.

“It’s difficult for Leaving Certificate students to decide exactly which part of engineering they will most enjoy so offering a common first year was important to give students the time to decide what they want to do. This will enable students to experience each stream of engineering and pick the right career path for their future.”

The courses will offer a very ‘hands-on’ practical experience for students in small lab classes so lecturers can offer the best educational experience. It will also offer a work placement in the third year to make sure students are industry ready.

Head of Department of Mechatronic Engineering, Dr David Mulligan said: “IT Sligo works very closely with industry and we build our degrees around the skills employers are looking for in industries where graduates are in demand.

Booming industries

"We are offering three new very exciting Level 8 degree courses in booming industries. Thanks to our emphasis on practical elements of engineering, smaller class sizes and close connections with industry, our graduates have an excellent employability rate.”

Qualification for the courses require a H5 in higher level Leaving Certificate maths as well as a minimum of a H6 in at least one other subject. The four-year degree will be aligned to meet the requirements of Engineers Ireland for Chartered Engineer with additional learning and will enable students to further their studies at master’s level.

The institute has an excellent reputation in engineering and has built very strong connections with industry leaders over its 50-year history.

For anyone interested in taking part in these courses, an virtual open day will be held on June 24. Please visit www.itsligo.ie for further information.
