The Young Engineers Society (YES) represents all young engineering professional members of Engineers Ireland under the age of 35. It is our mission to continuously support their professional and personal development by providing a range of events throughout the year geared specifically for the young engineering professional. The reason for this article is to explain what the YES is all about, what we have achieved and why we need you, your colleagues and your company to get involved. The society is entirely volunteer driven, run by young engineers for the benefit of other young engineers. We support engineers in the early stages of their career, from students up to seasoned graduates by providing workshops, courses, seminars, site visits, career advice, networking opportunities and assistance for becoming a chartered engineer with all events carrying CPD credits. We are also known to throw a good social! This year we have organised approximately 30 events so far and growing, thanks to support from ESBI, Bord Na Mona Powergen, Arup and Roughan & O'Donovan who sponsored last year’s YES Ball. https://youtu.be/DpSytqNO6tI The YES has grown over the past two years as more young engineers learn the value of being part of the network. Our annual programme includes accredited first aid training courses; introduction to project management for final year students; career and talent workshops; seminars on 3D printing; CV and interview skills nights; and industry site visits to name a few. All of these events are FREE or heavily subsidised and give members an excellent opportunity to meet their peers, share, learn and inspire. YES also canvased for the introduction of 10 FREE Online CPD Courses for all members through the Engineers Ireland website and more recently established the YES Public Speaking Group to promote confidence and competence in young engineers by helping them develop this key skill in a peer environment. Engineering is a practical and 'hands on' profession. Engineering students need placements as part of their course work. This is invaluable and vital to their education and development. YES receive many requests throughout the year from students asking for help to find industry placement. As volunteers, it is incredibly difficult for the YES to place all of these students. So being engineers ourselves we have aimed to streamline the whole process by creating an industry placement programme for student engineers. We are now looking for supportive companies which can offer at least one student placement to contact us. Our biggest upcoming event is the 15th Annual Young Engineers Black-Tie Ball. The ball is an excellent way of engaging young engineers and companies in a friendly environment. It has been very successful for the past 14 years, with last year’s event being sold out with more than 250 attendees. This year we are hoping to expand on past success by bringing together more companies and young engineers than ever before. The event will be sponsored by ESBI, Bord Na Mona Powergen, Vistakon Ireland, EirGrid, Byrne Looby Partners and Accenture, without which, it wouldn’t be possible. With more than 200 tickets already sold, it is certainly not to be missed. This year’s theme is Masquerade and the event will take place in the Double Tree by Hilton, Burlington Road on Saturday, October 24, 2015. The YES Ball is a fantastic introductory event and is always a massive success. If you, your colleagues or your company would be interested in attending please contact us for details. You can also purchase tickets directly via the Engineers Ireland website As a volunteer society, YES is always looking for new and better ways to support the profession and pipeline of young engineering talent coming through our university system. Here is how you and your company can get involved. Call to action:

  • Have you worked on an interesting or innovative project that you could showcase to young engineers through a site visit or presentation?
  • Do you have some skills or industry knowledge that you would be willing to pass on to a group of young engineers through a workshop?
  • Do you work for a company that would be willing to facilitate a student placement?
  • Has your company considered purchasing a table at our annual ball?
The most valuable part of the Young Engineers Society is being part of it. If you would like to support the work of the Young Engineers Society or to get involved as a volunteer, please contact a committee member by email, or connect via LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
