Course Overview

The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) came into force in Europe in 1999.  Since 2002, compliance with the Directive has been mandatory. The PED applies to pressure systems used in industry, with some exceptions (e.g. military and nuclear installations).  The Directive aims to remove technical barriers to the trade and supply of pressure systems within Europe and to ensure that pressure systems are safe.
Pressure systems coming under the scope of the PED include:

  • Refrigeration and air-conditioning systems
  • Compressed Air Systems
  • Steam Plant
  • Gas systems including carbon-dioxide and nitrogen (e.g. for packaging or cooling)

The responsibility for compliance with the PED falls mainly to the manufacturer, supplier or installer of the pressure system.  However, employers have a responsibility to ensure that the procurement of new equipment or the modification of existing equipment complies with the PED.

Course Aim

The course will provide delegates with an understanding of the basic requirements of the European Pressure Equipment Directive and the Irish Pressure Equipment Regulations. The course aims to assist those responsible for specifying or purchasing pressure systems to understand what the implications are and also how to check if a system does in fact comply.  It will assist those involved in the supply, installation or modification of pressure systems to understand whether their systems come under the scope of the Directive, and if so how to go about complying.

Learning Outcomes

On completing this course the participant will have an understanding of:

  • the legislative position of the Pressure Equipment Directive in Ireland,
  • the scope and application of the PED with regard to new systems and existing systems,
  • how to assess whether a pressure system comes under the scope of the Directive,
  • how to assess the risk category of a pressure system,
  • the role of a Notified Body,
  • the relationship with CE Marking and other related directives.
