Course overview
This course is a practical introduction to project management. It is designed to equip participants with a number of tools and techniques that they can use in their everyday projects to improve performance throughout the project lifecycle.
Those completing this programme can claim 35 hours formal project management education, which is one of the pre-requisites for sitting the Project Management Professional Certification exam with the Project Management Institute (PMI).
The course fee includes a hard copy version of the PMI’s Process Groups: A Practice Guide (2022) as well as additional course material.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand how projects support organisational strategy, value and intended outcomes
- Select and tailor predictive, adaptive or hybrid approaches to suit the project
- Develop a focused and practical project management plan
- Define project scope and develop schedule and cost baselines
- Establish clear governance, roles, responsibilities and decision-making arrangements
- Engage stakeholders and establish effective communication channels
- Build a collaborative and accountable project team
- Identify, assess and respond to project risks and uncertainty
- Monitor project performance and manage issues and changes

Programme
The course consists of two modules, each module lasting two days. Attendance at module 1 is a prerequisite to attending module 2. There is a gap of 4 weeks between modules to allow some application of the techniques after the initial sessions. There will be pre-course work and work during the course required to gain the certificate of attendance.
The programme follows the project lifecycle, while introducing the principles, performance domains and practical approaches set out in the PMBOK® Guide, Eighth Edition. Participants will learn how to tailor project-management practices to suit different projects and delivery environments:
- Unit 1: Establishing and initiating the project
- Unit 2: Planning the project
- Unit 3: Leading the team and delivering the project
- Unit 4: Monitoring and controlling performance
- Unit 5: Closing the project, evaluating outcomes and capturing learning

Trainer's profile
Fiona Levie is a consultant, lecturer and practitioner in project management, leadership and change, with over 20 years’ experience working across engineering, manufacturing, construction and service-led organisations in Ireland and internationally. Her background includes hands-on project delivery roles in complex technical environments, where she worked closely with engineers, architects and site teams to deliver large-scale, end-to-end projects.
Alongside industry practice, Fiona has extensive experience in education and professional development. She lectures and designs programmes in project management, organisational change, leadership, decision-making and innovation for universities and professional bodies including UCD Professional Academy, University of Limerick, Trinity College Dublin and others. Her work spans public and private sectors, including engineering, energy, insurance, enterprise development and EU-funded innovation programmes.
Fiona’s teaching and facilitation style is highly practical and applied. She focuses on helping professionals translate frameworks and tools into real-world decision-making, leadership and delivery, drawing on both traditional and agile approaches aligned with current project management standards.
