Fundamentals of Valves & Actuators for Process Control Systems

1-day course

CPD Credit: 6.5 hours, C1

Course Overview

This one-day course will provide an insight to valve and actuator technology. It will cover check valves, shut-off valves, solenoid valves, regulators, pressure relief valves, control valves, actuators, and valve accessories.

Delegates will learn how to ensure the selection of the optimal valve size, body and trim materials, components, and accessories.

Each delegate will learn through active participation using exercises and practical sessions covering the different types of valves.

Course Aim

The primary objective is to give each delegate a practical understanding of valves, actuators, and accessories through a comprehensive look at the design and application of valves as an integral part of the piping system. Control valves as the final control element in a process control system will be covered as well as essential maintenance and installation guidance.

The course will cover, but is not limited to:

Introduction to valves

Valve Types

Comparison of valves and actuator type

Relief Valve

Control Valve

oControl Valve Selection: Rotary/Sliding Stem

oLiquid Valve Sizing

oGas Valve Sizing

oValve Characteristics – Inherent and Installed

oValve Cavitation

oValve Noise

oPositioners and Transducers

oValve Application Guidelines

Valve Specification

Specialty Valves

Installation and Maintenance

Who Should Attend?

This course is focused to the needs of chemical, instrumentation, maintenance, and mechanical engineers and technicians working with pumps across the biopharma, food, water and wastewater, chemical and power generation sectors.

Trainer's Profile

Ger Nagle

Gerard Nagle has previously worked for Emerson Process Management with extensive experience with Fisher control valves. He also has extensive experience with Farris pressure relief valves. Currently, Gerard is a lecturer in TU Dublin in the department of Mechanical Engineering. He lectures modules on Fluid Mechanics and Unit Operations. Gerard has a M.Sc. in Process Systems Engineering from Cranfield University.

"Great presentation"

"Material was well presented and the course was engaging"

"Informative and interesting course – well organised material. Helpful to have visuals as part of the course, i.e., valves, actuators, regulators, etc. Ger is a very knowledgeable instructor and explains concepts well."

"Interesting course, well delivered. Ger was very knowledgeable and excellent at communicating the content."
