Course Aim
The aim of the course is to supplement the instruction given on this topic in the four-day, Conciliator Training Programme and to enable practising conciliators to improve their skill at this aspect of conciliation. Attendance at and passing the assessment of this course will greatly assist applicants seeking to be admitted to the Engineers Ireland Panel of Conciliators.
Equally, the course will provide practising conciliators with an opportunity to refresh and develop their skills in writing recommendations when that becomes necessary.
Course Programme
The course will cover the required structure and content of a Recommendation and clearly explain how a Recommendation differs from an Adjudicator’s Decision and an Arbitrator’s Award. Tuition will be from experienced and expert conciliators and it will include panel discussions. Assessment will be based on the standard of a Recommendation for the resolution of dispute details of which will be set out in a scenario provided at the end of the day which all candidates will be required to submit.
Learning Objectives
While the primary purpose of conciliation is to achieve an agreed settlement, this is not always possible. Where agreement cannot be reached, the conciliator must issue a Recommendation for the resolution of the dispute. It is therefore essential that the conciliator has the required skill to issue a Recommendation which minimises the risk that either party will reject it. The objective of the course is to teach these skills to attendees so that they will be competent to issue a Recommendation, which will be accepted by the parties.
Who Should Attend
Those who aspire to be conciliators and are considering applying to be admitted to the Engineers Ireland Panel of Conciliators should attend this course. They should also attend the four-day EI Conciliator Training Programme. Practising conciliators should also attend this one day as it will be of benefit to them when it becomes necessary to write a Conciliator’s Recommendation. Even experienced conciliators are likely to find this course beneficial.
