The Private Sector Contract for Building and Engineering Works Designed by the Employer was launched in September 2020.

The Standing Committee established to manage, maintain and update the Conditions of Contract wish to consider the topic of force majeure, particularly in the light of the COVID-19 global pandemic and whether amendments to the conditions of contract are warranted. All members are invited to find out more about this topic at a free webinar 10:00am on Tuesday, 13 July 2021.

This one-hour webinar moderated by Ciarán Fahy will include:

  1. An introduction to the topic from Ciarán Fahy, Chair of the Standing Committee.
  2. A presentation by John Curtin as to a high-level analysis of research by the Standing Committee into how other well-known forms of contract deal with the issue - or not as the case may be.
  3. A discussion led by Anthony Hussey as to whether a provision is in fact required in the first place, whether 'force majeure' is considered the preferred term and how it ought to be defined, how the consequences might be dealt with in terms of time and money and whether optional termination upon the event needs to be dealt with.
  4. Views from individual members of the Standing Committee.

This event is a joint initiative between Engineers Ireland, the Construction Industry Federation and the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland.
